PILATES TUITION
What is Pilates?
Pilates is a gentle form of
exercise. It concentrates on bringing the body
and mind together and involves using controlled
movement. The focus is usually on one or two
limbs at a time in a standing or lying position.
Some movements are performed very slowly while
others are performed rhythmically.
Pilates is different from aerobics because it is
training the mind to control the body. Every
exercise is aimed at using correct body alignment
and using core muscles to achieve trunk stability.
Pilates helps to tone the muscles and improves
flexibility and posture, promotes body awareness
and induces relaxation
How
was Pilates devised?
Joseph Pilates was born in
Dusseldorf in Germany in the year 1880. As a
child he was of poor health and tried several
methods of exercise to build up his body
including yoga, weight training, ballet and
martial arts.
During World War 1 he was in confinement in
England. It was during this time that he devised
a programme of exercises for his fellow inmates.
He believed that they were able to survive an
influenza virus because of their fitness. After
the war he returned to Germany and became
involved in the world of dance and was also a
successful trainer for the Hamberg Police.
Several years later he sailed for America,
meeting his wife Clara on the boat. In New York
they opened up their first fitness studio which
attracted many dancers and actors because it
complimented their traditional form of exercises.
Pilates techniques are now taught all over the
world.
About
the Pilates class.
Before commencing the
classes, new participants are asked to fill in a
medical questionnaire to ensure that I have
knowledge of anything that might affect your
ability to perform any of the movements or
positions.
Classes commence with a gentle warm up, followed
by a progressive series of body exercises
combined with movement. At the end of each
session there is a short time spent on relaxation
before going home.
Classes run for six weekly sessions and are paid
for in advance and pre-booked. There is normally
a maximum of twelve people in a class.
After
the first six weeks you will know the basics of
the Pilates principles which will equip you to
use it in your everyday life and also to use the
exercises taught, safely at home. You may decide
to stop here with this basic knowledge, but this
is just the start. Pilates can progress on to be
extremely demanding physically and mentally but
its good to see progress made in a relatively
short time.
Classes run during term times only but
individuals or twos can be tutored if
requested during school holidays.
For hygiene reasons, I request that you bring
your own exercise mat or very thick towel. All
other equipment is provided. I suggest you wear
loose comfortable clothing, and socks if you wish.
Please contact me for details of class times.
I can also teach Pilates on a 1:1 basis by
arrangement. Please contact me for details.
