ACUPUNCTURE
I am
a member of the AACP (Acupuncture Association of
Chartered Physiotherapists) and have undertaken
training at post graduate level and am qualified
to use acupuncture for pain relief following
a strict code of practice. I
have practiced acupuncture with physiotherapy for
the last 6 years. I specialise in western and
trigger point acupuncture for muscular skeletal
conditions.
I operate under extremely high standards of
hygiene and immediately dispose of the single-use
sterile needles after treatment.
What is Acupuncture?
Acupuncture is a system of healing which has been
practised in China and other Eastern countries
for thousands of years. It uses the insertion by
a skilled acupuncturist of very fine needles to
stimulate self healing. Although often described
as a means of pain relief, it is in fact used to
treat people with a wide range of illnesses. Its
focus is on improving the overall well being of
the patient, rather than the isolated treatment
of specific symptoms.
How
does acupuncture work?
Research
shows that acupuncture causes the release of
natural pain relieving chemicals stored in the
brain (endorphins). These
chemicals assist the body in its healing process
as well as providing pain relief.
Acupuncture can complement physiotherapy and is
particularly useful in the treatment of headaches,
whiplash, arthritis, back pain and neuralgia.
Treatment is applied through the insertion of a
special needle or needles into the body at
specific points. This is a safe and virtually
painless technique when administered by a trained
practitioner.
Will
acupuncture hurt?
At
most a slight sensation of discomfort may be
experienced as the fine needles are inserted but
this feeling should not last. Occasionally a
greater sensation may be felt which is believed
to signify the movement of energy. Side effects
are rare but if you have any concerns please
speak to me.
Blood
Donation
The National Blood Transfusion Service approves
acupuncture treatment provided by AACP members.
Acupuncture
and Physiotherapy
Physiotherapists can offer a wide range of
treatment methods and may combine acupuncture
treatment to complement other modalities
including manual therapy, exercise therapy or
electrotherapy.
Acupuncture does not work for all conditions or
patients but research shows that pain relief is
achieved by 70% of patients treated when
conventional medicine has not worked.
The response rates for acupuncture
vary; some patients respond quickly while others
require a few treatments before the cumulative
benefits are felt (more commonly with a chronic
condition).
It should be noted that sometimes the
symptoms appear to become a
little worse to start with. This however is not
normally a worsening of the condition.
Acupuncture
can help with the following conditions:
- Neck
& back pain
- Frozen
shoulder
- Tennis
elbow
- Tendonitis
- Carpal
tunnel syndrome
- Headaches
- Muscle
& joint problems
- arthritis
& rheumatism
- sports
