TENS for Childbirth
| What
isTENS? |
| TENS (Transcutaneous
Electrical Nerve Stimulation) has been
used in childbirth for more than 18 years.
It is a safe, non-invasive, drug free
method of pain relief. This
involves the use of four pads or
electrodes which are placed on the skin.
Low current pulsed electrical energy is
then passed through; which in turn is
transmitted to the nerves responsible for
the pain in childbirth - namely those of
the uterus, cervix and pelvic floor.

| HOW DOES
IT WORK? |
Tens is thought to
provide relief of pain in two ways:
- The
body produces its own natural
pain killer or analgesic, a
morphine-like chemical found in
the fluid surrounding the spinal
chord. The production of
endomorphine is produced to
suppress pain and TENS stimulates
the production of this.
- During
contractions the unit is thought
to "turn off" or "block
out" the painful stimuli
being sent by the nervous system
from the uterine receptors. TENS
stops the stimuli being carried
to the brain, so if the signal is
blocked, pain is not perceived.

About 82% of women
who use TENS for childbirth say they
found it useful enough to want to use it
again in subsequent childbirth.

TENS MACHINES |
| Special TENS units
for releif of pain during childbirth can
be HIRED from several souces by mail
order. It is important however that the
mother and more importantly the partner
are aware how and where the pads /
electrodes are to be placed in position
to obtain the best effect. Machines
can be hired from me with full face to
face instruction from a fully qualified
physiotherapist at very competitive rates.
